4 Dangerous Myths About Dentures
September 18, 2025

Are you considering replacing your missing teeth with dentures? If you’ve been hesitant to commit to treatment because of confusing things you may have heard about them, the great news is that many of your fears may not be real. Here are the facts about four common denture myths, and why they may just be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make!
Myth #1: Only Seniors Need Dentures
Although it’s true that many older people need dentures, that doesn’t mean there’s an age requirement. In fact, teeth can be missing for many reasons, including poor oral hygiene, genetics, and injuries, all of which can happen at any time. Thus, you should never let your birth date get in the way of restoring your smile!
Myth #2: You Don’t Need to Replace Dentures
The good news about dentures is that most pairs last between five and seven years, but unfortunately even the most meticulously maintained pair won’t last forever. For those seeking a more lasting restoration, implant dentures offer the same natural appearance but are more secure and last much longer than traditional dentures.
Myth #3: You Can Sleep in Dentures
While it might seem like a good idea to sleep with your dentures in your mouth so you’re ready to start the day smiling the next morning, the truth is that you do need to remove them each night when you go to bed. This is for two important reasons. First, your gums need time to recover and absorb nutrients, which they can’t do with your dentures in place. Second, your prosthetics can dry out during the night, so they should be submerged in water or denture soak when not in use to prevent them from becoming permanently damaged.
Myth #4: Dentures Don’t Need Care
Finally, even if you have no natural teeth remaining, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to take care of your prosthetics. To keep your dentures looking and smelling their best, be sure to remove them after each meal and scrub them completely with a soft-bristled toothbrush and either a denture cleanser or unscented hand soap. Floss between each tooth and rinse them well before returning them to your mouth or soak them if you aren’t going to be wearing them for a while.
Furthermore, don’t skip your regular dental check-ups. Even if you have no real teeth, it is important to visit your dentist every six months. These appointments are an excellent opportunity to have your dentures checked for any damage, as well as to ensure that your jawbones are strong and your mouth is healthy and free of gum disease and oral cancer.
Remember, while there’s plenty of confusion out there about dentures, the truth is that these durable, lifelike prosthetics are an excellent way to replace missing teeth at any age.
